Ukrainians living close to the oil depot fire at Kalynivka, in the Kiev oblast, found black spots of dirt covering their houses, crops and cars, Wednesday. The phenomena is thought to be caused by the black plume of smoke that still rises over the depot, though local residents claim they have had no official word on the effects of the dirt on themselves and on their crops. Victoria, a resident of neighbouring village Krachki, lamented that she “was worried” and that “no one tells us anything.” The gigantic fire has left at least five dead and over 20 people injured after it started on Monday night, when a number of oil tanks caught fire and exploded. Throughout Tuesday and Wednesday hundreds of firefighters fought the blaze, in an attempt to keep the flames from reaching several other oil containers that were at risk of exploding. The blaze is now under control, although there is a growing concern as a large amount of toxic substances have been released into the air around the depot. The Interior Ministry of Ukraine has stated that it believes that safety violations were the cause of the blaze, as counterfeit petroleum products were allegedly being stored at the facility.
