United Nations Special Envoy to Syria, Staffan de Mistura condemned the Syrian government for reportedly blocking aid trucks heading into eastern Aleppo, during a press conference in Geneva, Thursday.
“The facilitation letter, i.e. final permission for the UN to actually reach those areas, has not been received,” stated de Mistura, before adding “It is particularly regrettable because normally during these days we are losing time. These are days which we should have used for convoys to move with the permit to go because there is no fighting."
The UN envoy did however note, that the US-Russia brokered ceasefire in Syria “is and remains potentially a game-changer.”
Speaking alongside Secretary General of the Norwegian Refugee Council, Jan Egeland, de Mistura also stated that "The reduction of violence is, by and large, frankly, holding. In fact, has been substantial."
On Wednesday Russia's Defence Ministry announced that Moscow had called for an extension of the cessation of hostilities in Syria for another 48 hours. A ceasefire regime across the country came into force on Monday at 19:00 local time.
One of the focuses of the truce has been to improve humanitarian corridors so as to send aid those most heavily affected by the fighting, particularly in Aleppo.
