At least 8 journalists were detained outside Moscow police headquarters on Thursday while staging solo pickets in support of fellow colleague Ilia Azar, who was detained two days earlier.
Among the detained are Mediazona editor-in-chief Sergey Smirnov, Ekho Moskvy journalist Tatyana Felgenhauer, and RT journalist Ilia Vasyutin.
According to Moscow’s Interior Ministry, “today, from Petrovka street, 38, police officers brought citizens who violated the requirements of regulatory legal acts regarding public events during the high alert period to the territorial police department for proceedings.”
Protesters, including the journalists, were holding solo pickets in support of Novaya Gazeta journalist Ilya Azar, who was detained on Tuesday and sentenced to 15 days administrative arrest.
Azar was holding a solo picket himself in support of arrested “Police Ombudsman” administrator Vladimir Vorontsov who was arrested on May 8 on charges of extorsion.
