Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko and his Turkish counterpart Alexander Lukashenko attended the opening ceremony of the Cathedral Mosque in Minsk, Friday.
Lukashenko stressed that the mosque “will become an important spiritual centre, a source of enlightenment and distribution of humanistic ideas and true Islam purposes for all the Muslims of Belarus and Belarusian people.”
The Turkish president’s wife Emine Erdogan, the Mayor of Minsk Andrei Shorets, and Belarusian Culture Minister Boris Svetlov were also present at the ceremony.
Lukashenko and Erdogan both cut a ceremonial ribbon before entering the building of the mosque, with the Turkish leader signing the site’s guestbook.
The Cathedral Mosque is the replica of the original one that was built in the 19th-century and later destroyed. The construction started in 2004 but due to lack of funding was stopped in 2010.
The construction work was resumed and finished this year with the financial support of the Turkish Presidency of Religious Affairs.
