European Union (EU) foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini discussed the ongoing conflict in Syria during a press conference in Luxembourg City on Monday. Mogherini said that a different approach had to be taken towards Syria if a political transition was to be achieved. "When we say the need to start urgently a political transition, or a political process leading to a transition, it means that we have first of all to have a reality check," Mogherini said. Giving reasons for the change in approach, Mogherini said that "the situation on the ground, four years and a half after the beginning of the conflict, the situation is still that of having Assad sitting in Damascus and terrorist organisations - and in particular Daesh - gaining ground in Syria and also in Iraq," adding that "the reality check means that it's not more of the same that is going to lead to the political process to start and to end with a transition but to have a different kind of approach which means involving also representatives of the regime at the negotiating table led by the UN." Mogherini noted that discourse with the Syrian government was necessary to achieve any progress in Syria, saying that the EU supports the United Nations (UN) talking with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. "Staffan de Mistura, and the UN in general, are talking with the Syrian regime. And this is something that, as we support the UN-led process, we can support," the Italian politician said.
