SOT, Gao Feng, Chinese Ministry of Commerce spokesperson (Mandarin): "As China has emphasised several times, the trade war started with the imposition of tariffs, and it should end with the abolition of tariffs. This is an important condition for the two sides to reach an agreement. Both producers and customers will benefit from the tariff cancellation. It has benefits for both China and the US as well as the rest of the world. Both sides have interests in this rather than just one."

SOT, Gao Feng, Chinese Ministry of Commerce spokesperson (Mandarin): "If both sides reach a 'phase one' deal, the degree of tariff cancellation should fully reflect the importance of the 'phase one' deal; and its importance should be appraised by both sides. Both sides are conducting in-depth discussions on this now."

SOT, Gao Feng, Chinese Ministry of Commerce spokesperson (Mandarin): "The sum of the GDPs of China, Japan and Korea is close to one-fifth of the world's [GDP]. The economic complementarity in these three countries is good. Signing a free trade agreement within China, Japan and Korea is a common aspiration. It further releases the potential for cooperation and deep fusion of the value chain in the region. It is good for the prosperity of the regional economy and the development of integration. Based on preliminary work, the three sides reached a consensus to speed up negotiations. We would like to further improve products trade, service trade, liberalisation and standard of investment based on RCEP [The Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership], to create the RCEP Plus free trade zones. Recently, China, Japan, Korea agreed to hold the 16th round of talks on the free trade zones."

A Chinese government spokesperson has called on the US to remove tariffs as a key condition for ending trade disputes. Gao Feng was speaking at a news conference in Beijing on Thursday.
"If both sides reach a 'phase one' deal, the degree of tariff cancellation should fully reflect the importance of the 'phase one' deal; and its importance should be appraised by both sides," said the spokesperson adding that 'both sides are conducting in-depth discussions on this now.'
Washington and Beijing are at a stalemate despite US President Donald Trump's announcement in October of the suspension of a tariff hike on $250 billion (€227 billion) worth of Chinese products, in the first phase of a trade deal with China.
