Dozens of activists gathered outside a branch of the burger restaurant chain 'Byron' in central London on Friday to protest its alleged cooperation with recent immigration raids undertaken by the Home Office.
Banners which read "No human is illegal” and “Capitalists exploit us, the Tories deport us” were held by protesters, who also waved socialist red flags. John, one protester, expressed his anger: “I think it’s fucking frightening to think that what these motherfuckers have done could become normal. They are people burglars. To lure their own staff into a trap and have them deported! Fuck that, fuck capitalism, fuck the Tories, workers must unite. Byron workers need to be standing out here with us in solidarity with their brothers and sisters whose lives have been torn out from under them.”
He went on to show scepticism about the basis of the claims: “Are there truly valid claims for their deportation? I do not trust the Tories, they are lying bastards. That’s why I’m here. We got to shut this place down.”
Customers of the food-chain were more forgiving; Mike said: "Well, the laws are there for a reason, right? Immigration’s not a problem, illegal immigration is a problem.”
The raids, which took place on July 4, saw 35 people arrested across London for alleged immigration offences. Byron have said they were acting in accordance with immigration laws, and have dismissed accusations that they had lured staff to a training day where they were detained en masse. The claims were made by Spanish newspaper 'El Ibérico.' The Home Office reportedly said the raids were carried out with Byron's "full co-operation."
