A UNICEF exhibition of backpacks representing the headstones of dead children in conflict was visited by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres near the UN headquarters on Thursday.
The installation, which consists of 3,758 school backpacks arranged in rows, aims to be a wake-up call to world leaders to ensure greater protection of children living in conflict, and tries to illustrate the scale of young lives lost.
According to the 2019 Secretary-General Annual Report on children and armed conflict, more than 12.000 children have lost their lives in ongoing conflicts due to airstrikes, landmines and cluster munitions in countries like Afghanistan, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen.
