An Egyptian man accused of hijacking an EgyptAir Airbus A320 passenger plane and forcing it to land in Cyprus appeared in court in Larnaca, Wednesday.
Fifty-nine-year-old Seif Eldin Mustafa used a fake suicide belt to take control of EgyptAir flight MS181 during a domestic flight from Alexandra to Cairo before forcing the plane to land at Larnaca airport in Cyprus on Tuesday. After a six-hour standoff between Cypriot authorities and the hijacker, all passengers and crew were released unharmed and Mustafa was detained by police without incident.
"The suspect has been presented to the court today and he will stay in custody for an eight-day period. Our role and in particular the role of the crime investigation department, which is handling the investigation, will involve an examination of all of the aspects of the case," said police spokesperson Andreas Angelides.
Authorities have stated that the incident was a personal issue and not politically motivated or relating to terrorism. During negotiations, Mustafa reportedly requested political asylum and to speak with his ex-wife and child, who reside in Cyprus. He now faces a range of possible charges including air piracy, kidnapping and threatening behaviour.
