A flying 'hoverbike' known as the 'Scorpion 1' and developed by the Russian company Hoversurf was successfully trialed in Moscow on Thursday.
The vehicle is what's known as a 'cargo multi-copter,' capable of both manned and unmanned flights, carrying weights of up to 250 kg (550 lbs) and moving at 100 kph (62 mph). So far, due to safety measures, it is not permitted to fly higher than three meters above ground.
Inventor and founder of Hoversurf, Alexander Atamanov, noted that driving the Scorpion 1 "feels like nothing on earth," adding that "you sit like on a cross-country bike but at the same time you feel the ground disappearing from under your feet."
The company is already developing a hybrid version, which would allow for a flight time of more than an hour and which could accept various fuel types. The Scorpion 1 is available for pre-order at the affordable cost of $54,000 (just under €50,000).
