In the first quarter of 2016, Germany has seen a "significantly decreased" number in asylum seekers arriving in the country, German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere announced in a press conference in Berlin on Friday.
While, during the same period, there was a 112.4% increase in asylum applications, compared to the same period in 2015, de Maiziere put this down to an increased number of applicants from people already residing in Germany.
He maintained, "When the figure for asylum applications increases disproportionately, it is just a good message for the working out of old cases and has nothing to do the amount of those who are newly arriving here."
De Maiziere also pointed out that Germany's figures for deportation and voluntary expulsion have increased significantly. In the first two months of 2016, there were 4,500 deportations from Germany.
Between January and March, decisions were made on 150,233 asylum application - 61.6% of these resulted in the receipt of a refugee status.
