John Kerry Dangles Sanctions Relief During Trip to Russia

Secretary of State John Kerry said Tuesday that if Russia abides by the Minsk protocol setting a ceasefire in Ukraine, sanctions enacted by the United States and European Union against Russia can be lifted. He called the protocol the “best path to peace” to end the on-and-off violence in the region that began last year. His Russian counterpart, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov echoed Kerry’s support for the Minsk agreement, but added that “violations of the cease fire do continue” on “both sides.” The American and Russian leaders both urged parties on both sides to cease hostilities immediately. Both leaders began the press conference by thanking the other side for its cooperation.
