'You Stink' activists clashed with security forces in Beirut, Thursday, as thousands of protesters took to the streets demanding an immediate solution to the garbage crisis. Shortly after the demonstration began, a group of protesters dismantled a security barrier separating the demonstrators from the police cordon and blocking the access to the Downtown district of Beirut, where the parliament is located. For more than four hours, police used water cannons and tear gas to stop the activists, who responded by throwing rocks, sticks and other objects. 35 people were reportedly hospitalised due to tear gas inhalation. The #YouStink campaign originally began with demands to implement long-term, sustainable solutions to deal with Beirut's waste management issues, but has since developed into a widespread anti-corruption campaign.
