Residents of Jaltipan in the Mexican state of Veracruz prepared and ate "Chogosta," balls made of soil that is extracted from the ground and then processed and cooked, on Thursday.
Pedro Martinez, the last Chogosta craftsman in the town, explained that not every soil-type is suitable for eating, but that the best soil is found at a depth of around five metres (16.40 feet) and is purple in colour and without a trace of sand.
The soil is chopped and ground before being saturated in water and grilled on a stove with herbs. According to Martinez, the food is particularly suitable for sick and pregnant people.
