Farmers and dairy producers gathered by Ruse's Danube Bridge on Friday, blocking a border checkpoint between Bulgaria and neighbouring Romania. Armed with large bottles of milk, the group poured the substance onto the floor, carrying national flags and chanting anti-EU slogans. The event was organised in protest against the 'dumping' of low-cost products into the country by EU member and non-member states affected by Russian sanctions. Calling for radical changes to EU agricultural policy towards Bulgaria, the group have warned of fresh protests at the end of June unless their demands are met. The protest follows from comments made by Deputy Prime Minister Tomislav Donchev in May that some Bulgarian farmers affected by sanctions could receive compensation of up to (€400,000) $450,000 from the EU.
