An Italian marine who was detained in India for four years over his alleged involvement in the death of two fishermen during an anti-piracy mission landed back in Rome on Saturday.
Salvatore Girone was greeted by family members and Italian naval staff as he stepped off the plane at Rome's Leonardo da Vinci International Airport.
Girone was one of two marines arrested in 2012 after Indian prosecutors accused them of murdering the fishermen during an operation to protect an Italian oil tanker. The other marine who was recently released is reportedly suffering from severe health problems as a result of the four year ordeal.
Italy has argued that the incident occurred in international waters thereby the case should not be heard in India.
