Hundreds of the Lesbos residents, as well as refugees, marched through the city on Tuesday night, protesting against the European Union's border policy.
Due to the EU-Turkey deal, signed in March, refugees who are arriving in Europe might be sent back to Turkey and apply for the asylum there. Reportedly, about 500 people already have been sent back and 6,000 have to stay in Lesbos right now, due to the bureaucratic obstacles.
The southern Greek islands, including Lesbos, are one of the main entry points into the European Union for refugees from the Middle East and Africa who are fleeing violence, war, and poverty. According to the UNHCR, about 1.3 million refugees reached Europe by boat last year, compared with more than 238,000 this year so far.
