Syria: Russian sappers detonate Palmyra mines ahead of reconstruction

08.04.2016
Sappers from the Russian armed forces were seen disposing explosives, as de-mining and bomb clearance operations continued in Palmyra on Friday.
The de-mining operation has been underway following the liberation of the ancient Syrian city from so-called Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL), by Syrian government forces, in March.
Palmyra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, formerly known for housing some of the best-preserved monuments of antiquity anywhere in the world. Since capturing the city in May, 2015, IS militants have blown up the 2,000-year-old Temple of Bel, and the Arch of Triumph, and have used the Roman-era amphitheatre for filmed public executions. The UN's cultural agency described the groups' archaeological demolishing as a 'war crime.'
