A fatal balcony collapse at the Liberty Gardens apartment complex in Berkeley appears to have been caused by rotted wooden beams.
The balcony, which gave way during a 21-st birthday party, led to the death of six college students from Ireland.
Seven others were seriously injured.
Reports of the event state 13 people on the crowded balcony plummeted 50 feet to the pavement below.
Mayor Tom Bates stated investigators found evidence of wood rot caused by moisture.
This has led investigators to believe the support beams were not correctly caulked and sealed to prevent water damage during construction.
Darrick Hom, president of the Structural Engineers Association of Northern California said after visiting the site, "that wood was decayed or had some serious deterioration to the point where they could touch it with their hands and it was coming off in chunks."
