Thousands rallied in Berlin on Saturday in solidarity with refugees fleeing to Europe and with the people of Greece who are suffering from a long-running debt crisis. Activists from various movements and parties protested against the continuous mass casualties in the Mediterranean Sea, due to migrants - mostly from war and famine-torn countries - seeking refuge in Europe. Also, participants of the rally expressed their objections to the way European states treat those who managed to cross the sea, isolating them in detention camps and centres. Many demonstrators also vocalised their opposition to the European policy towards Greece. The Greek government and its three lenders, the IMF, the European Union and the European Central Bank (ECB) are currently in deadlock over the last installation of €7.2 billion ($8.1bn) of rescue funds, the release of which contingent upon further cuts - according to Greek negotiators, who reject further austerity. The march started at Oranienplatz square in Kreuzberg district and proceeded to Berlin's iconic Brandenburg Gate. It coincided with the international World Refugee Day, marked on June 20 and the beginning of the world-wide international week of solidarity with Greece, suffering from a long-running debt crisis.
