Hundreds of anti-immigration protesters took to the streets of Sofia, Saturday, for a demonstration in support of the Bulgarian police officer accused of shooting a man dead near the Turkish border. The border police officer Valkan Hambarliev killed the Afghan refugee as he attempted to make the crossing on Thursday night, near the town of Sredets. Bulgarian Interior Minister Rumyana Bachvarova described the incident, which resulted from a warning shot that ricocheted, as a "bad coincidence." The High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Bulgaria strongly condemned the incident.
