25.03.2016
Security was high ahead of the international exhibition football match between Italy and Spain in Udine, Thursday, in light of Tuesday's Brussels attacks.
Hundreds of police officers and emergency services were located in and around the stadium. Fans were instructed to arrive early, as more thorough security checks at entrances were in place. Despite the high alert, there was a high turnout at the match, according to reports. A minute of silence for victims of the Brussels attacks took place before kick-off.
At least 34 people were killed and more than 180 injured in bomb attacks carried out on Brussels international airport and the Maelbeek metro station. The attacks occurred just four days after Salah Abdeslam, a suspect in November's Paris attacks, was captured by Belgian police in Brussels. The so-called Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS, ISIL) has claimed responsibility for Tuesday's attacks.
