Crowds of pro-government supporters could be seen in tears, early on Monday morning, after Congress voted to proceed with Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff impeachment.
The scenes in the Brazilian capital come as two-thirds of the 513 delegates in the lower chamber voted in favour of impeachment, with the matter will now to be sent to the upper house, the Senate. Out of 400 of the 513 votes cast, 297 decided to impeach Rousseff, with 97 against, four abstentions and two absences.
If the upper house decides Rousseff should stand trial, she could be suspended for 180 days, with Vice-President Michel Temer of the PSDB expected to take the reins. In the event that Rousseff is found guilty by a two thirds Senate majority, she will be permanently removed from office.
Some 500,000 people are believed to have taken to the streets in the capital to protest both for and against the impeachment proceedings, with mass demonstrations and potential violence predicted to explode around the country.
