Spokesperson for the Pistorius family Anneliese Burgess gave a statement to the press outside the home of disgraced Paralympic gold medalist Oscar Pistorius' uncle in Pretoria, Tuesday. After being released from prison on parole on Monday evening, Pistorius began serving the remainder of his five-year sentence under house arrest at his uncle's residence. "It is very important for the family to emphasis that Oscar's sentence has not been shortened or reduced. He is simply entering the next phase of his sentence now," Burgess stated. "The family will support Oscar as he serves out the remainder of the five-year sentence handed down by the trial judge and he will strictly adhere to the condition set by the parole board and community corrections," she added. Twenty-eight-year-old Pistorius was found guilty of culpable homicide in October 2014 after shooting and killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine's Day 2013. Pistorius shot Steenkamp through a locked door but avoided a murder conviction after claiming that he thought she was an intruder. Pistorius was released on patrol from the Kgosi Mampuru II prison on Monday and must now serve the remainder of his five-year sentence under house arrest at his uncle Arnold Pistorius' property in Pretoria. Prosecutors are seeking to appeal the decision, arguing that the disgraced athlete should have been convicted of murder and not the lesser charge of culpable homicide.
