29.04.2016
Thirty-three lions were flown to South Africa after they had been rescued from 'deplorable conditions' in Peruvian and Colombian circuses. The animal rights movement Animal Defenders International (ADI) released footage from its camp in Lima, where the lions were held and put in transportation containers before being sent to the airport.
The rescue and the airlift were organised by joint efforts involving ADI and the governments of Peru and Colombia. Besides the 33 lions, an additional 100 other animals were also reportedly rescued.
The lions' new home will be the private Emoya Big Cat Sanctuary in Limpopo province.
