Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko spoke at an MH17 memorial service at St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Cathedral, Kiev, Friday, one year on from the disaster. Prime Minister of Ukraine Arseniy Yatsenyuk and Ambassador of the Netherlands to Ukraine Kees Klompenhouwer were also present at the ceremony. Klompenhouwer also delivered a small speech in English before Poroshenko took to the lectern. Following the speeches, prayers were held and an orchestra played music while a choir sang. Poroshenko reaffirmed his belief that the incident was a "terrorist attack" that was backed, directly or indirectly, by the Russian Federation. He then asserted that the plane could not have been shot down without the support of Russia. "the ultramodern 'Buk' rocket, was also provided to terrorists," he said. He went on to say that the incident could not have occurred without a "direct order from the highest governance of the neighbouring country." He stated that the downing of the Malaysian Airlines flight served to reveal the "monstrous hybrid " nature of the conflict in eastern Ukraine and allowed the "whole world" to see "who is who."
