Hungary: Thousands protest closure of newspaper in Budapest

09.10.2016
Around 2,000 people gathered to protest in Budapest on Saturday evening, after Hungary’s leading broadsheet newspaper, Nepszabadsag, was closed down.
The newspaper's owner, Mediaworks, said that they had to suspend the publication due to a decline in sales. However, civil rights activists believe that the closure is in fact a threat to press freedom, as journalists and the opposition accuse the government of pressuring the company into the decision.
Employees were taken by surprise when they received their notice letters on Saturday morning and were prevented from entering the building. Nepszabadsag called the closure a 'coup' on Facebook and vowed to return soon.
The newspaper has often been critical of the government's decisions and Prime Minister Viktor Orban. So far the government has not made any comment.
