22.03.2016
German Chancellor Angela Merkel offered her condolences to the victims of the Brussels terror attacks in Berlin, Tuesday.
Speaking at a press conference just hours after the attacks, Merkel said: "Our dismay is immeasurable and so is our determination to defeat terrorism. First of all I am thinking about those who were deprived of their beloved ones in an airport hall, or while riding the subway. I wish them strength and that they feel our compassion."
The German leader went on to pledge Germany's assistance "in every way possible," while declaring solidarity with the Belgian people.
Earlier on Tuesday, at least 34 people were killed and more than 100 injured in bomb attacks carried out on Brussels international airport and the Maelbeek metro station. The attacks occurred just four days after Salah Abdeslam, a suspect in November's jihadist attacks in Paris that killed 130 people, was captured by Belgian police in Brussels. The so-called Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS, ISIL) has claimed responsibility for Tuesday's attacks.
