A white tiger that mauled a man to death was killed in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi, Wednesday, after severe flooding allowed many exotic animals to escape the capital's zoo. Vakhtang Gomelauri, minister of Internal Affairs for Georgia was on site to deal with press and public inquiries. Frantic efforts to recapture the animals led the director of the zoo, Zurab Gurielidze, to claim that all the creatures had been found. However, he later admitted to issuing a false statement and apologised, leading police marksmen to rush into action. They were not able to reach the tiger in time before the fatal attack, which reportedly occurred in a local warehouse. Sunday's flash flooding left at least 19 people dead, submerging roads and destroying houses.
