Negotiators from the Colombian government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) announced they have agreed to restart negotiations in order to reach a final peace deal in the decades-long conflict between the two sides, in Havana on Friday.
In a shared statement read out by the top negotiator of the government Humberto de la Calle, and FARC negotiator Ivan Marquez, both sides established that they will begin discussions on how to amend the final peace deal after almost four years of discussions in Cuba.
On September 27, after 52-years of bloody conflict, a 297-page agreement was signed by Colombian President Juan Santos and FARC leader Timoleon Jimenez (also known as Timochenko) following almost four years of negotiations.
However, in last Sunday’s referendum Colombian voters rejected the peace deal by 50.24 percent. Despite this, President Santos was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for his efforts in reaching a peace agreement with the FARC rebels.
