Germany: Clashes break out as 7,000 rally against eviction of left-wing squat

Violence broke out after around 7,000 activists came together to rally against the eviction of Berlin's legendary left-wing squat on Rigaer Strasse in Friedrichshain on Saturday. Numerous arrests have been made.
In June, the building was cleared by 300 police officers after the local property management company reportedly asked police for help in the eviction. In response, activists staged a night-time rally where they torched cars and clashed with police.
First occupied in 1990, the building has been largely the residence of left-wing political activists. The building appeared in the media several times in January, 2016, at the centre of a controversial police operation.
