An excavator equipped with hydraulic shears dismantles the remains of a collapsed residential block in the industrial city of Magnitogorsk on Saturday.
According to Deputy Governor of the Chelyabinsk Region Sergei Shal, "the project for the production of [dismantling] works has been agreed upon today by Gipromez [Magnitogorsk Institute for Design of Metallurgical Plants] and experts from Moscow, and the customer - the administration of Magnitogorsk."
"Today at 15:00 [13:00 Moscow time and 10:00 GMT] the first preparatory work for dismantling should begin," Shal added.
Previously, the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations (EMERCOM) reported that in total 899 people and 217 units of machinery, including three aircraft, were involved in the rescue operation and the dismantling of the building.
At about 06:00 local time (01:00 GMT) on December 31, an entire section of a 10-storey tower block in Magnitogorsk collapsed, causing dozens to be trapped under debris in freezing conditions.
A total of 39 people were confirmed to have died by EMERCOM.
