Germany: Protesters interrupt AfD event in Rieden

02.10.2016
Protesters attempted to storm a rally held by right-wing political party Alternative for Germany (AfD) in Rieden, Bavaria, on Saturday.
Security guards and AfD supporters stopped the protesters by the entrance from accessing the building until police came. The police officers then shoved the protesters out the door so the party's leader Frauke Petry could continue with her speech. During her talk, Petry denounced Islam, saying it is "anchored in medieval times" and does "not know women's and minorities' rights and equality".
Initially it was not clear if Petry would be able to meet her supporters in Amberg, as the owner of the event location 'Riedener Festhalle' terminated their contract with the AfD. However at the last minute district court Amber, decided the right-wing party has to be permitted to hold their rally there. As soon as this was announced anti-AfD activists organised a protest. Earlier in the day Petry attended a rally in Nuremberg, where she was also met by picketers.
