12.10.2016
A floating crane en route to the port of Kerch sank in poor conditions on Wednesday, four kilometres (2.48 miles) from the Crimean shore, with at least two crewmembers still missing.
Russia’s Ministry of Emergency Situations immediately dispatched a helicopter to the scene and the search radius was widened to 30 km (18.64 miles).
Speaking in Yalta, the ministry’s Igor Zayavenko warned that “the sea is stormy in the operational area; work can be conducted, [but] there is currently no result."
A rescue boat was also dispatched and all vessels in the vicinity of the coastal village of Livadia were notified.
Reports differ but there was at least seven - and a maximum of eight - crew members on board at the time of the incident and either two or three are currently missing.
The majority of the crew were immediately rescued by one of two tugboats towing the crane to Kerch.
Despite the crew battling for over an hour to maintain the integrity of the vessel the barge continued taking on seawater, causing the crane to tip over.
Weather conditions remain difficult with a storm in the vicinity of the search area and two metre (6.56 feet) high waves.
