Protesters took to the streets for the fourth night running in the centre of Charlotte, North Carolina, on Friday, following the fatal police shooting of a 43 year old African-American man named Keith Scott.
According to police, officers went to a Charlotte apartment complex looking for a suspect with an outstanding warrant, Tuesday, when they saw Keith Lamont Scott exiting his car before shooting and killing him. Police claim that Scott was carrying a gun, his family insist he was carrying a book. There is video footage of the shooting which the police have so far refused to release to the public.
His death is the latest incident in a long line of police shootings and has been met with outrage by the general public, the US African-American community, Black Lives Matter activists and other anti-racist groups.
The scale of the demonstrations over the shooting have prompted North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory to declare a state of emergency and deploy the National Guard. Several arrests have been made during the protests in which a man, Justin Carr, died in a shooting. Local authorities tweeted that the man was killed by another civilian, a claim some protesters have disputed. Barry Morrison, a protester and retired army veteran said "all I want is that footage. If a black man indeed shot a black man pointing a gun at him that footage would have been released last night."
