Fighters allied with the UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) battled forces of the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL), Friday, after the US began using airstrikes against the takfirist group earlier in the week.
The UN-backed government forces were allegedly making significant advances, gaining control of the Sirte neighbourhood of Al-Dollar. As IS begin to reportedly lose control in the city, Libyan families have reportedly started to return home to Sirte after months of displacement.
US airstrikes, requested by the UN- installed government, were initiated on Monday despite contention amongst Libyans.
Sirte has been the site of a two-month campaign against IS. Large parts of the city have been under IS control since 2015, with a reported 5,000 fighters from the group operating out of Libya, most of them based in the city.
