Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met with the United Nations and Arab League Envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura in Moscow on Tuesday to discuss Russia’s military campaign in the country. "The main aim now is to join efforts in the fight against terrorist groups like ISIS, Jabhat al-Nusra and others," Lavrov said. The Russian foreign minister also disregarded suggestions that the "military operation, carried out at the request and consent of the Syrian government, impedes the political process,” urging De Mistura to see the "artificiality of this type of link.” The UN envoy expressed hope that the “acceleration of military activity” is matched by “an acceleration of the political side,” calling on Moscow to "renew the political process" in order to end a four-and-a-half-year conflict that has claimed the lives of over 250,000 Syrians.
