Journalist (Serbian): "What do you personally think of NATO?"
Milan Mirkovic, Head of 'Association of victims of NATO air strikes in 1999' (Serbian): "I think about it in the worst possible way. That is an organisation of occupation, which brings evil, unhappiness and blood wherever it goes."
Montenegrin opposition groups passed a vote on holding a national referendum on NATO membership, at an assembly in Murino, Wednesday, two days before Montenegro's parliament is set to ratify a NATO accession treaty.
Deputies of the Democratic Front, the Movement for Change (PZP) as well as some 150 councilors of local governments participated in the assembly.
President of Movement for Change (PZP) Nebojsa Medojevic, who attended the assembly, expressed that, "we strongly support the organisation of a referendum because at this moment it is not just a daily political question but a historically moral issue in Montenegro." Leader of the Democratic Front Andrija Mandic, who was also present at the assembly, stressed that "the issue of joining NATO is a question of democracy, and to resolve this issue, people must be asked."
Earlier in March, the US approved Montenegro's accession to NATO. The US was among one of the last NATO members to ratify Montenegro's accession, something that all 28 countries must do in order to guarantee the state's membership of the alliance.
Six civilians, including three children, were killed in a NATO air strike on the village of Murino in Montenegro on April 30, 1999.
