Dozens of protesters were arrested after blocking a highway in Ferguson, Monday. The protesters were joining a 'day of civil disobedience,' one day after the first anniversary of the killing of 18-year-old black teenager Michael Brown by white police officer Darren Wilson. Police officers can be seen violently slamming one protester to the ground before arresting him after he attempted to evade them. The events unfolded following the detention of over 50 activists in St. Louis earlier on Monday after the authorities declared a state of emergency across the county. Those arrested in St. Louis included prominent black activists Cornel West and Reverend Osagyefo Uhuru Sekou. Actions have been called across the United States to demand justice for Brown one year since he was shot dead by a white police officer in Ferguson. On Sunday night gun fire was exchanged between police and unidentified persons during a Mike Brown solidarity rally in Ferguson. Police say they shot a person during the exchange. The event was part of a weekend-long '#UnitedWeFight' programme, organised to commemorate the first anniversary of Mike Brown's death. Authorities have declared a state of emergency in St. Louis. Eighteen-year-old Brown was shot by officer Darren Wilson in Ferguson on 9 August 2014, sparking protests across the United States. On November 24 2014, the St Louis County grand jury announced that Darren Wilson would not be indicted and on 4 March 2015, the US Department of Justice cleared the police officer of civil rights violations claiming that Brown was shot in "self-defence."
