Dozens of protesters descended on the area around Santa Clara County Jail, on Friday, to protest against sexual violence, as former Stanford University student Brock Turner was released after serving half of his six month sentence for sexual assault.
The protesters were also demanding the recall of Judge Aaron Persky, who presided over Turner’s case. They were questioning the very short sentence that Persky handed out and what effect it may have on rulings in future cases. As sexual assault survivor Sofie Karaoke, who spoke at the demonstration, put it, "If someone who had such a clear case was failed by the system, then what hope is there for the rest of us."
Turner, a star swimmer for the Stanford University team, was convicted of assault after raping a drunk and unconscious woman on the university campus. However, the sentence that he received was criticised at the time by those who argued that class and racial privileges were at play in the decision.
