The United States Senate passed a bipartisan government funding bill that would finance an additional 55 miles (88.5 kilometres) of fencing along the US-Mexico border in Washington DC on Thursday, in a bid to ensure government funding and to prevent another shutdown.
Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer spoke about the bill before the vote was taken, saying "it represents a fair compromise that includes priorities from both sides of the aisle. I expect the legislation will pass this chamber with a significant bipartisan majority. Pass the House. And be sent to the president with plenty of time to avoid a government shutdown tomorrow at midnight."
The bill was passed with 83 voting in favour and 16 voting against it, and came shortly after the White House confirmed that they would sign the bill to prevent another shutdown, but also that US President Donald Trump will declare a national emergency in an attempt to build his proposed border wall.
