The Rudopa region is home to the last master craftsmen specializing in traditional stone tile roofing, a unique and laborious architectural technique. This highly specific craft is facing decline as few people remain who can build and arrange the distinctive 2-3 cm thick stone tiles, with younger generations opting for modern construction methods. Master craftsmen, who learned the trade through self-teaching and decades of restoration work since the 1960s, continue to cover historical landmarks like the Gushivite Konace in Mogilica. Local tourist associations are promoting the region's cultural heritage, developing new routes in both the Bulgarian and Greek parts of Rudopa, including one named after singer Vala Balkanska.
