Poland: Monument to Soviet hero General Chernyakhovsky dismantled

A monument honouring Soviet World War II General Ivan Chernyakhovsky was dismantled in Pieniezno, Thursday, near the spot where he was killed in action in February 1945. According to the Mayor of Pieniezno, Kazimierz Kiejdo, it took eight years to receive all the permits to allow city hall to remove the memorial. The sculpture will be moved to a warehouse, although Russian officials from the Kursk district have asked Polish authorities about the possibility of having the monument delivered there. Ivan Danilovich Chernyakhovsky was the youngest ever Soviet general of the Red Army, and one of the leaders of the Soviet fight against Nazi Germany. Twice Hero of the Soviet Union, he died after suffering a lethal wound in combat. Poland's Council for the Protection of Struggle and Martyrdom Sites, claims Chernyakhovsky was responsible for the elimination of the local Home Army command structure.
