US swimmer and Olympic gold medalist, Anthony Ervin, became the oldest ever Olympic swimming winner at the age of 35 in Rio de Janeiro, Saturday, after taking the Olympic gold medal in the 50m freestyle.
After winning the gold medal in the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Ervin quit sports and since then allegedly worked in a tattoo parlour, played in a rock band and struggled with depression. The Olympic champion even sold his medal for $17,000 (€15,200) to donate the money to Tsunami victims.
Ervin also commented on a possible retirement of his teammate Michael Phelps: I don't want to precipitate that the retirement is going to be permanent or not. I hope not, you know, the guy is still so good. He can still offer so much as a competitor."
Earlier this week, Ervin also claimed a gold medal in the 4x100m freestyle.
