The Iraqi Army's chief of staff announced that the military was ready to launch an assault on the city of Mosul, Thursday, according to local media reports. Mosul has been under the control of the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL) since June 2014.
Chief of Staff of the Army First Lt. Gen. Othman al-Ghanemi held a meeting with the military leadership to discuss final preparations for the assault on Thursday. Leadership of Peshmerga forces were also reportedly consulted about the start of operations.
Mosul is the last major city in Iraq under the control of IS, and the army has recently been working towards its recapture by liberating nearby towns and cutting off supply routes to the IS militants who remain in the city.
