Italy: Milan awakens to scenes of destruction following May Day clashes

02.05.2015
Burnt-out cars and broken windows and graffiti were visible reminders Saturday of clashes the day before between protesters and police at the annual May 1 demonstration in Milan. Using International Worker's Day as a platform for their demonstration, thousands of protesters marched through Milan city centre in an attempt to highlight the alleged superfluous consumerism of the 'Expo Milano 2015' exhibition which brings in some 20 million visitors over a six-month period. At least six cars, as well as several shops, banks and cafes, were burnt out by the protesters during the May Day demonstration. Clashes broke out between police and protesters, who torched cars, threw rocks, smashed windows, threw firecrackers and dragged burning rubbish bins to block streets. Police officers used water cannons and tear gas to disperse the crowd.
