21.11.2016
Police officers kept a watchful eye on the Christmas market in Augsburg on Monday, as it was among the first to kick off the festive season with heightened security measures in place.
After the Paris attacks in November 2015 the German government decided to increase the police force for larger events, such as the Oktoberfest or Christmas markets, with particular focus on Berlin but also in other German cities. However police officers are not just in place to thwart any possible attacks, but also to make visitors feel more at ease and prevent any theft or other crimes.
Addressing the visitors Augsburg mayor Kurt Gribl said that there is “every reason to be grateful”, as so many people ensure the safety of visitors and that everyone can “live like [they] want to”.
