Tens of thousands of people arrived and departed through Beijing West Railway Station, Thursday, as people across China began journeying back home for the Chinese New Year holiday, in what is believed to be the world's largest annual human migration.
Security at the Chinese capital's train stations and airports has been heightened to ensure the safety of passengers and the efficiency of their travels. The measures were implemented to ensure order and avoid the chaos seen in other cities like Shanghai and Guangzhou, where over 500,000 people were left stranded outside train stations for hours on Monday.
A reported 400 armed police officers, 200 railway security guards, and over 650 volunteers were deployed to Beijing West Railway station alone, which is expecting to handle over 5.5 million passengers during the Spring Festival travel rush.
Taking place across a two-week period, the Spring Festival migration, known as 'Chunyun' in Mandarin, is thought to be the world's largest human migration, with an estimated three billion journeys forecast for this year along - over double the population of China.
