Hundreds of mourners arrived at the headquarters of the American Popular Revolutionary Alliance (APRA) party to pay their respects and give their final farewells to former Peruvian President Alan Garcia, in Lima on Thursday.
People lined up outside the building, singing slogans and applauding, while waiting to lay flowers on the coffin and say goodbye to the former leader.
Garcia shot himself on Wednesday when police arrived at his home in the Peruvian capital to arrest him in connection with the ongoing 'Odebrecht' corruption investigation. He was rushed to hospital and underwent emergency surgery, but died a few hours later.
He was to be the third former Peruvian president to face charges as part of the scandal involving the Odebrecht construction giant, which has admitted paying Latin American officials more than $800 million (€708 million) in bribes over decades in return for building contracts.
Three days of national mourning were declared in Peru following Garcia's death with a funeral ceremony expected to be held later this week.
