Around 150 activists placed nearly 200 chairs in front of the Palais de Justice in Paris to protest against tax evasion as former French Budget Minister Jerome Cahuzac's tax fraud trial kicked off in the Court of Cassation, Monday.
Activists carried 196 chairs to the bridge in front of the courthouse, but were prevented from going any further by the police. Protesters chanted slogans and held signs condemning tax evasion with messages including "Stop fiscal heaven."
Cahuzac was forced to resign as France's budget minister in 2013, after admitting that he had been hiding at least €600,000 ($669,000) of his own money in a Swiss bank account. If convicted guilty, the 63-year-old faces fines of up to €2 million ($2.2 million) and seven years in prison. The scandal rocked the socialist government of Francois Hollande who had entrusted him to tackle tax evasion in the country.
